Television Ghost - 12" - 12"(Die Stasi)Despite featuring a quote from a Sonic Youth run-off groove- "Lee Is Free" - this is much more no wave MARS attack and much less garage/pop than their 7". THIS IS WHAT WE WANTED TO HEAR! Rippin atonal guitar interplay, demented humans barely in control, propulsive percussion... you can have your Liquid Liquid and ESG wannabees, bring the ROCK and the NOISE! Samples |

Tenn Crud Combo - ST - 12"(Deranged Records)This recording has been sitting idle for over 6 years and is now thankfully available – rejoice! At a time when Toronto had no good bands to speak of, came TEEN CRUD COMBO with their DWARVES, ZEKE, and MOTORHEAD worship to grace Toronto’s eager punk and rock souls. Now long broken up, TCC consisted of people who went on to play in RUINATION and BRUTAL KNIGHTS and put on an excellent live show. It didn’t take long for TCC to become the best thing Toronto had to offer but for the most part, this new found fame was pretty much limited to Toronto. They did release a 7” on BlackLung records but broke up before really becoming more than just a local phenomenon. This LP features 13 speedy punk songs which includes 4 from the BlackLung 7” and 9 previously unreleased tracks. |

The Frustrations "Exploding Mind" - 7"(Die Stasi)When "Exploding Mind" unpredictably locks on a choice, snare-heavy Caribbean-influenced riddim, we're all rewarded. This shit is bananas. The GTC- ST - 7"(White Denim)After a two year hiatus, the GTC return in full force. Famous for their fast modems, rotten horns and hip-hoppery, they refuse to be ignored. While there has been a flood of "screamo" bands in the recent years, the GTC nimbly avoid the many pitfalls of the genre, ala pirate flag artwork and overly derivative sound. While they take heed from many of their predecessors, such as Honeywell or Antioch Arrow, they manage to escape being written off as a second rate facsimile of years gone by. Breaking new ground while fluently covering old is how the GTC operate. Playing many shows in the Northeast, the GTC are gathering a decent following in the area, their live shows brimming with furvor and red-cheekedness. This 7" is their first release with their new and most impressive lineup. Samples |

The Hair - Ghosts - 7"(Cool For Cats)'Ghosts' is a glorious little pop number, that combines the funk of 'Radio 4' with 'Kaiser Chiefs' harmonies. It really is that simple. Perfunctory keyboards come flying out of a 'KC and The Sunshine Band' forgotten world, leaving the vocals to bark and rattle wherever they bleedin' well want. 8/10 GOOD HAIR, I LIKE IT Samples |

The Hex Dispensers - Lose My Cool - 7"(Douchemaster)If anyone is still unfamiliar with The Hex Dispensers then you missed out on one of the best lps of 2007. This record is your chance to be privy to the spooky, speedy, catchy-as-fuck style of rock n' roll that The Hex Dispensers are dispensing. These songs are as memorable as those of Texas cohorts The Marked Men and as dark as Jay Reatard's. What does is it for me is the absolute strangeness of content. If anyone has questions as to what a "Taxidermy Porno" is, please forward them to Alex Cuervo. This three song 45 also features a killer cover of The Wipers "Tragedy" |

The Long Blondes "Giddy Stratospheres" - 12"(What's Your Rupture?)A four song 12" of their UK indie hit "Giddy Stratospheres" that's all fun and frenzied guitars, handclaps, call and response shouting. A five-minute dance pop song that builds, swells, bursts into absolute madness. And if you love darts, let me tell you that you've found your new anthem. Comes packaged in it's own plastic shopping bag ready to take anywhere. The Long Blondes, Kate (lips), Dorian (licks), Reenie (hips), Screech (sticks) and Emma (high kicks), have released three 7"s in the UK, recorded several radio sessions for the BBC and played shows alongside Franz Ferdinand, Maximo Park, and Death From Above 1979. The Maccabees - Latchmere - 7"(Fierce Panda)Just months after Paul Smith praised the renaissance of vocalists singing with clear regional accents, the likes of The Kooks and now fellow Brighton residents (by way of South London) The Maccabees are going around sounding like they're from somewhere between Liverpool, Scotland, and rural Northumbria. 'Latchmere' is a quick, jaunty, infectious single; obviously everything it's designed to be. The vocals are somewhere between the inflexions and rhythms of those bands already mentioned (the former Luke Pritchard and chums, the latter Maximo Park), and the sound is not dissimilar to various other hype bands of late, Good Shoes being the easiest to hand. If unpretentious, occasionally gritty, fun yet ultimately unoriginal guitar pop is your bag, you'll love it. Samples |

The Mohawk Lodge - Wildfires - 12"(White Whale Records)With Wildfires, The Mohawk Lodge sheds their dirty folk leanings in favour of blue collar indie soul. Whereas debut disc Rare Birds catered in campfire songs, the band’s sophomore record is a musical forest fire. Since their inception, The Mohawk Lodge have left concertgoers sated and stages sweat-stained as they entrench their reputation as a live band to be reckoned with. Bringing their working man's ethic to the fore, the Lodge launch a three-pronged guitar assault supported by an airtight rhythm section. Samples |

The Parkinsons - Sounds of London - 7"(Fierce Panda)As a band whose notoriety precedes them like a particularly rank aroma, it already feels like The Parkinsons have been around for years. With a career which has seemingly revolved around getting drunk, getting on stage and getting their kit off, they have headed the rocking, rolling Scene With No Name pack like a particularly enthusiastic scoutmaster at summer camp. Remarkably then, it is not to be forgotten that they only started lurching out of Camden's finest back rooms in the autumn of 2001, and even more remarkably, considering the amount of attention they have accrued in such a short period of time, 'Streets Of London EP' out on August 26th is the band's debut single release. Late last year saw 'Bad Girl' make an appearance on the Fierce Panda 'Mosh & Go' EP and February of this year witnessed the release of the band's mini-album, 'A Long Way To Nowhere', but this is the first bona fide Parkinsons 45. |

The Pets- Let's Go - 7"(Douchemaster Records)Okay. Time for total random record selection time, which is so what I did here. It's been a long while since I've just grabbed something and ran with it - like a week. Okay, so not that long, but I want something new to flood my ears every week, okay? And lemme tell ya, I'm glad I grabbed The Pets. It's been a while since I've listened to a band that had that Ramones-esque pop punk thing going. I always seem to skim over those bands for trashy trash can garage rock that sounds like it was recorded in a, uh, trashcan. The Pets are a nice reminder that I need to get out of the fucking trashcan every once in a while and listen to something a bit cleaner, as it is very nice and still rocks as much as the trashy trashcan stuff. "I Want Fun" sounds like an awesome '80s pop punk beach tune - bring on the cult horror beach party movie, 'cause this song would be perfecto as the movie opener, on the radio as the victim-teens drove to the beach house, oh yes. That said, the first 30 seconds or so kind of turned me off - the vocals are oddly prominent and feel out of place with just a guitar and drums. Once the song crescendos after those thirty seconds with the addition of bass, the song evens out and sounds a lot better. That sounds nitpicky. It totally is. "Let's Go", on the other hand, is total poppy punk perfection. It's weird that his vocals sounded displaced in the previous song, because he totally hits all the marks from second one to second end. Important to mention that he's got a kinda Gories-ish vocal thing going on - which is a total plus in my book as that vocal style rocks my world. I could listen to this song all day. And I will. So, thanks, The Pets! You're my band of the week! Samples |

The Pharmacy - Abominable - 7"(Tic Tac Totally!)Hyperactive and arty indie...ahhhh...I don't know what the hell this is! Some 60's rock vibe and a lot of crazy floating hooks flying around all over it. Listen to the media player on here to judge...but one song is never the same with these guys. Nutty hooks for every sub-par attention span with erratic keyboards climbing all over chimey rock rhythms and vocals that coast across the songs in a minute to minute fury. A modern power-pop sort of sound focused on a fun 60's vibe. Samples |

The Steps- Outlaw - 7"(Young and Lost Club)SINGLE REVIEW by Bodie Plecas for Morning Paper "The Steps new single hits the top floor As I've lamented many times, the Brits seem to discover the great American bands long before we do at home. The Strokes, White Stripes, Orson - all examples of US bands that had huge success across the pond before finding an equal audience in the land of their birth. Add another band to that list. Austin's rocking combo The Steps have released a single in Britain to be followed by a short tour in support. Impossibly young (in their late teens) for the level of competence and maturity of their sound, The Steps draw on a collection of influences from a wide time span to create a new and fresh sound. Listen closely and you can hear tinges of the aforementioned Strokes, a dollop of the Stooges, some Stones, Beatles - clearly a band with a hell of a good record collection. But that's only where it starts. The combination of these listening tastes in the hands of the band (William Thompson on guitar and vocals, cousin Sam Thompson on lead guitar, Stephen Ross on bass, and Z Lynch on some thundering Texas drums) is wholly original. Lead track on the single, "Outlaw", rides a sinewy guitar line, through the verse before being hurled headlong into the chorus. Thompson's raspy, emotive vocals claw across the top propelled by the rhythm section's hard charge forward. The Stoogey riff that drives second song "Cold Floors" is less similar to the actual Stooges sound than married to the propulsive primal urge of the originals intent. When the call and response chorus line "Oh, yeah" kicks in it brings a pop sensibility the Stooges lacked. Even more pronounced is the slowed down blues-break thump of the bridge that sounds like a reconfigured Beatles "I Want You" on a sex date with the White Stripes. The overall sound is a muscular offensive mounted on the shoulders of what has come before. William Thompson's vocals particularly give the band a stiff shot of originality - winding their way around the melody line much like Sam Thompson does in his complementary lead guitar breaks. The Steps have built a solid and rabidly enthusiastic following in Austin by all accounts. And judging by this first single, Britain should be soon to follow. The Brits can tell a great band when they hear one." |

The Stolen Minks- ST - 7"(New Romance For Kids)Combining '50s/'60s-style rock and roll with the modern age spunk of early Sleater-Kinney, this wonderfully unpretentious EP draws from the best of both eras to create some truly hip-shaking music. From the surf rock of the opening cut, "Minks Riot," to the kitschy playfulness of "Chug A Lug," the real stand out here has to be "Boys On The Floor." With sweet, sexy, yet sassy vocals, blistering keyboards reminiscent of the notorious Jerry Lee Lewis, himself, topped off with a Chuck Berry twist. (…) " 9/10 Venus Magazine |

The Ten Commandments- The Great White Mountain - 7"(Seeing Eye Records)Montreal’s Ten Commandments have been cultivating a sound that we like to call “barroom balladry”, but that only begins to scrape the surface. Thomas Function - The Insignificants - 7"(Tic Tac Totally!)t is just a good rock n' roll record. Sounds really not much like anything else. Melodic vocals and keyboard layered on solid poppy rock tunes. Do NOT think "synths" or "new-wave"...think KEYBOARD on ROCK. Tyvek "Summer Burns" 2X (SOLD OUT) - 7"(What's Your Rupture?)Alienated nowness banged out for love and bro-dom and drinks. Think half the monks, half the electric eels, playing half japanese's gear. New to the WYR? family, Tyvek -- Kevin (guitar/vox), Heath (guitar), Larry (bass/the law), and Matt (drums) -- hail from Detroit, MI; you can probably hear it in the music. Tyvek's songs are a product of trying to understand their city: the empty spaces, poisoned ground, burnt-out building shells. In spite of all that, Tyvek love the land, the city, the infrastructure, and the sound& the sound of turning it up and then having your friends turn it up too, until you're all wired into some cheap frequencies and feeling some real buzz in the air. Tyvek/Cheveu - split - 7"(S-S Records)Two months after Tyvek & Cheveu's fantastic West Coast tour, the "tour" 7" comes out! Right on. Ahhhh but many of you would have missed them anyway, so all you had was a wait on your hands. Right on. Tyvek is from Detroit. As of this writing, they have released on GREAT record which some of you might have ordered from S-S. Good thing because the thing has already hit ebay for ebay money and maybe it is one of the only recent records to deserve to go collector so soon. Like the first, with Future Junk, Tyvek continue to explore the melodic fringe of DIY, stealing bits & pieces from the classics but pulling it off...Cheveu, on the other hand, continue to spiral into new directions. On El Tortuga, it sounds like our dirty French men have been sucking on Another Man's Sac. Of course, it is a sideways suck. What else would you expect from the one band to define the cheap phrase "weird punk" better than anyone on the planet. No fancy pressing info on this: Just two good songs. Samples |
