Marked Men- Untitled - 7"

 (Shit Sandwich)

SS-09 - THE MARKED MEN - untitled 7"

The Marked Men are a part of the fertile and incestuous scene in Denton, TX that's given birth to bands like The Reds, The Riverboat Gamblers, High Tension Wires, and the Chop Sakis. As great as all those bands are/were, the Marked Men top the heap with a sound that's 50% punk rock, 50% power-pop, and 50% garage rock. That adds up to 150% of awesomeness. Their albums on Rip Off and Dirtnap landed at the top of "best of the year" lists of anyone that matters. This single has two brand new songs that are easily among the best the band has ever recorded. For real.

MARVELOUS DARLINGS- I dont wanna go to the party 7" - 7"

 (Deranged Records)

The first offering from Toronto’s MARVELOUS DARLINGS is finally here. Featuring Ben Cook and Matt Delong from NO WARNING and VIOLENT MINDS, the MARVELOUS DARLINGS take catchy punk to a level rarely seen or heard. The A-side track from this single is an absolute modern punk classic with killer RAMONES riffage and I say this with confidence. Not to overshadow the excellence of ‘Careerist’ (the B-side), ‘I don’t wanna go to the party’ is the obvious standout track on this record. Also worth noting, the MARVELOUS DARLINGS were one of Myspace’s ‘Featured Artists’ in November of 2007

Meligrove Band - THe Planets Conspire - 12"

 (We Are Busy Bodies)

THE MELIGROVE BAND Planets Conspire (V2/Sony BMG)
Some bands spend their whole careers looking for the magic formula and never find it. For others, success comes instantaneously. Then there are a few groups, like The Meligrove Band, whose careers are right in the middle. They've been around for more than a few years, but it wasn't until Planets Conspire ended up in the hands of V2 that they finally struck it big. It's not hard to see why they became the label's first Canadian signing. Producer Jose Contreras wanted to capture the Meligroves' live sound and he nailed it on the head. Every track on this disc oozes energy and immediacy. Listening to this record is like listening to Hot Hot Heat's Make Up The Breakdown — it's edgy yet polished, and operatic but still indie-rock friendly. Talk about making the most of an opportunity. Meth Teeth - ST - 7"

 (Sweet Rot)

Clearly the latest string of this whole singles racket being a fun and personal endeavor is starting to shine through, Meth Teeth being an obvious example. They’re three dudes from Portland who give off a really unsympathetic “poor vacation” attitude through these white trashy acoustic bike-folk actions, which are then run through a pinned-in-the-red production technique lifted straight off of Sic Alps and the thousands of lo-fi practitioners before them. I learn that one of the guys in this group was in Leper Print, whose single I was very into – what happened? Very much emperor’s new clothes, the songs failing to inspire in either writing or playing, and the poor sonic choice to make everything they’re playing all reverb-y before they push everything into the red just doesn’t work. Monsters From Mars- Surfing Through A Creepy Castle - 7"

 (Tic Tac Totally!)

A Brittany Spears cover...Telstar cover...and original surf scorchers on the same wax? You have no choice but to get this. Hahahaha! "Surfin Thru A Creepy Castle" is the debut 7-inch EP from Monster From Mars. Combines a lot of elements of surf and garage rock, with a "spooky" theme throughout like the Mummies did (I hate comparing them to the Mummies tho...). All recording here was done by the band themselves on reel to reel tape and with classic vintage rock n roll gear. Sounds good to me! (Seriously, one of the nicest sounding "vintage" type rnr recordings I have heard in a bit here. from the songs, to the vibe, to the recording, to the fun factor, these guys hit on the original surf rock vibes easily.) Do not dismiss OG for kitsch! It's a fuggin resurrection! And you will be eternally damned without this record my son!

MOTO - Spiral Slouch EP - 7"

 (Shit Sandwich)

SS-04 MOTO - Spiral Slouch EP

MOTO are Masters Of The Obvious, one of Chicago's longest running and, tragically, oft-overlooked treasures. The Spiral Slouch EP is the umpteenth release in their eightyleventeen year history, and it's a motherfucker. The top side features two new hits recorded at the Noise Floor by Garret Hammond (who also recorded their latest amazing long-player, Kill MOTO), while the bottom side features two equally brilliant home recorded gems. In sum you get four catchy mid-tempo punk rock numbers that will be stuck in your head until approximately the end of time.
